Double-Doubles by McClain and Garcia Lead No.13 Bulldogs to 51-36 Win over Gavilan to Open Lady Bulldog Classic

Freshmen Kelly McClain and Destinee Garcia recorded double-doubles, and sophomore guard Marissa Torres sank four three-pointers to lead the Allan Hancock College women's basketball team to a 51-36 win over Gavilan to close the opening day of the 17th annual Lady Bulldog Classic on Thursday evening. The Bulldogs, who are ranked No. 13 in the South Region poll, won their seventh straight win to improve to 8-1 overall. They will play Lassen in the championship semifinals on Friday at 7 p.m. inside Joe White Memorial Gymnasium. Gavilan dropped to 2-5 overall.
The Bulldogs went on a 15-2 run over the final 6:28 of the first quarter and first 10 seconds of the second quarter to take control of the game. They extended their lead to 26-12 midway through the second quarter and carried a 26-18 lead into halftime.
Garcia and McClain carried the Bulldogs in the second half. Hancock scored 19 points in the first 14 minutes of the second half to regain a 13-point lead at 45-34 Garcia and McClain accounted for eight points apiece in that stretch, while Torres sank a three-point bucket to help Hancock to its seventh straight victory.
McClain finished with 16 points, 16 rebounds, and five steals to set new career highs in all three categories. She pulled down eight offensive rebounds and blocked two shots.
Garcia made five of her seven shots form the floor to finish with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The freshman added two assists and three steals.
Torres, a Templeton High School graduate, made four of eight from three-point range to finish with 12 points. She added four rebounds.
Freshman Syenna Ramirez finished with nine points, five rebounds and four assists. The St. Joseph High School graduate made just four of her 17 shots from the floor, but played solid defense for 40 minutes.
Hancock shot 31 percent overall from the floor by making 19 of 61 shots. The Bulldogs sank five of their 11 three-point shots for a 45 percent clip. Hancock sank all eight of its free throws.
Hancock dominated the glass and finished with 44 rebounds, including 17 offensive boards. Gavilan had 22 rebounds.
Gavilan shot 31 percent from the field and made 15 of its 49 shots. The Rams made half of their eight free throws and sank two of nine from three-point range.
Cydney Caradonna led the Rams with 12 points. She made five of 19 shots from the floor.
Earlier on Thursday, undefeated Siskiyous (9-0) routed Cuesta (4-6) 99-44. Five Eagles reached double figures led by Hannah Thompson who scored 23 points and 22 from Melissa Dailey. Mission Prep graduate Connor Storlie led the Cougars with 10 points. Siskiyous has scored 95 or more points in six of its nine games this season.
Saddleback (5-5) defeated Barstow (6-5) 60-55 behind 15 points from Bryanna Lopez In the third game of the day, Lassen (5-6) handled Monterey Peninsula (2-6) 67-42. Kyana Scott and Celine Bethel led the way with 15 points apiece for Lassen.
