No. 14 Hancock Women Come-From-Behind to Beat Oxnard 64-53

Marissa Torres, Kelly McClain and Destinee Garcia combined to score 21 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Allan Hancock College women's basketball team to a 64-53 come-from-behind conference win over Oxnard on Saturday afternoon. Hancock rebounded to even its Western State Conference record at 1-1 and improve to 12-5 overall. Oxnard dropped to 1-1 in league and 8-6 overall.

The 14th ranked Bulldogs fell behind 45-42 with 8:38 to play in the game when they went on an 11-0 lead. McClain made a layup to make it a one-point game. Torres, a sophomore, drained three-point buckets on back-to-back Hancock possessions to give Hancock the lead for good 50-45.

Torres finished with 13 points, four rebounds, two steals and two assists. The Templeton High School graduate made five of her 12 shots overall and three of seven from three-point range. 

McClain finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. The freshman came off the bench to make five of 11 shots from the field and two of her five free throws.

Freshman guard Syenna Ramirez led the Bulldogs with 14 points and 12 assists. She added six rebounds, including five offensive boards. The St. Joseph High School graduate made six of 19 shots from the field. She scored seven points in the first quarter to give Hancock an early 19-4 lead.

Garcia, a freshman guard, finished with eight points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals. Garcia sank three of eight from the floor.

Michaila Miller added eight points and four rebounds for Hancock.

Oxnard scored the first bucket of the game, but Hancock went on a 15-0 run over the next seven minutes fueled by six points from Miller. The Bulldogs led 19-7 after the first quarter. A three-point bucket and a layup from Ramirez, and a basket by McClain to open the second quarter resulted in Hancock's largest lead of the game 26-7 with 7:07 to play in the first half.

The Condors regained their composure to close the deficit to 35-27 at halftime. Oxnard outscored Hancock 11-6 in the third quarter to trail 41-38 to start the fourth quarter.

Hancock shot 40 percent overall (26 for 64), including four of 13 from three-point range. The Bulldogs made just eight of their 16 free throws. Hancock finished with 37 rebounds and 22 assists.

Oxnard finished the game shooting 31 percent (21 for 67). The Condors attempted 28 three-point shots and made just five of them or 18 percent.

Each team committed 16 turnovers. Hancock cashed in the Oxnard miscues for 21 points, while Oxnard had 18 points off turnovers.

Juliette Marquez led Oxnard with 16 points. She made five of her 23 shots from the field, including four of 18 from three-point range. Karrie Franklin added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Condors. 

Hancock opens a two-game conference road trip on Wednesday, Jan. 13, at Moorpark at 5 p.m.
