
Hancock Women's Hoops to Host LA Pierce Wednesday and Cuesta Saturday
The women's basketball team returns home to host a pair of Western State Conference games after splitting two road games last week. Hancock starts the week 2-2 in conference and 13-6 overall.
Hancock will open against L.A. Pierce on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 5 p.m. inside Joe White Memorial Gymnasium. The Brahmas are 0-3 in league and 2-12 overall. Pierce has lost WSC games to Cuesta (54-61), Ventura (39-79) and Moorpark (48-57). Hannah Massey, a sophomore forward, is Pierce's leading scorer at 11.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Nichalae Henderson, a sophomore guard, averages 10.1 points and 3.2 assists. Nazi Raheem is the team's top rebounder with 7.2 per game to go with 7.6 points. During halftime, local athletes from the Special Olympics will play an exhibition game.
Cuesta will visit Hancock on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 3 p.m. The Bulldogs will try to snap a 10-game losing skid to Cuesta. Hancock last beat the Cougars on January 15, 2011.
The Cougars start the week 1-2 in conference and 6-13 overall. Cuesta will host Oxnard on Wednesday. Cuesta defeated LA Pierce (61-54), but lost to Ventura (44-77) and Santa Barbara (58-68). Cuesta has three players averaging at least 8 points per game led by freshman guard and Templeton High School graduate Autumn Russell who averages 10.1 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. Connor Storlie averages 8.9 points, 3.1 assists and 2.1 steals per game. Biba Kirschner averages 9.9 points.
Last week, Hancock captured its first win since 2007 at Moorpark with a 48-43 victory. Sophomore forward Michaila Miller (Santa Barbara HS) scored a season-high 13 points to go with eight rebounds. Destinee Garcia captured her sixth double-double of the season with 12 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Freshman guard Syenna Ramirez (St. Joseph HS) added 11 points, six assists and three steals. The Bulldogs ended the week with a 77-32 loss at Ventura, the fourth ranked team in the South Region and seventh ranked team in the state.
