A big 3rd quarter helped the Hancock College Women's basketball team pull out the victory against Bakersfield College 50-48 Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs were coming off of a convincing win against L.A. Southwest College on January 5th, defeating the Cougars 65-24.
Bakersfield was coming into the contest 7-10 after defeating Cuesta College at Joe White Memorial Gymnasium the day before with a score of 64-50.
The first quarter was highly competitive with the Bulldogs gaining an early lead of 10-6.
The Renegades fought back, outscoring the Bulldogs 14-11 and closing the gap at halftime for a score of 21-20.
The third quarter would prove to be the difference maker. The Bulldogs unselfish play and excellent ball movement resulted in a 17 point quarter with five Bulldogs contributing in the scoring column. The Bulldogs defense held the Renegades to just 7 points in the quarter, extending the lead to 8 points.
Bakersfield did not lie down, closing the Bulldogs lead to just 3 points with 2:43 left on the game clock.
Crucial rebounds by Tashara Pruett and timely lay-ups by Willow Bailey and Danielle Morgan fended off the Renegade come-back.
The Bulldogs escape with the victory 50-48.
Freshman guard Danielle Morgan finished with 16 points and 5 assists. Sophomore forward Tashara Pruett dominated the glass, finishing with 9 points and 15 rebounds.
The Bulldogs begin conference January 19th when they travel to Oxnard. Tip-off is at 3pm.
