Women's Basketball Opens Season with Close Win Over De Anza College

Righetti freshman Alijah Paquet led all scorers with 27 points and freshman Milan McGary led both teams in defensive play with 13 rebounds in the Allan Hancock College women's basketball 74-70 season opener win over De Anza college Thursday, November 7. The win starts day one of the De Anza Winter Classic, a three day tournament event. 

Paquet went 11-for-21 overall, 3-for-9 behind the three-point arc, and two-for-two at the charity stripe. She also ended the game with the second highest rebound mark at nine along with two assists and two steals. 

De Anza had a better shooting percentage at 60% on 32-for-53 shooting compared to Hancock's 42% on 25-for-59 shooting. Hancock however shot better from three-point range over De Anza 6-1 and earned 18 points at the charity stripe to secure the win. Both teams ended the game with nine assists each. 

De Anza also led defensively in rebounds 32-20 and overall 40-33. Hancock forced 12 of De Anza's 16 turnovers off steals. De Anza forced nine of Hancock's 15 turnovers off steals.

Every Hancock player scored at least four points in the win.

Paquet ended the game with 27 points, Mcgary earned 16 points, Jayci Bayne scored 13, Kelsie Prado and Maddie Miller both scored seven and Sarah Gudeman scored four. McGary led the game with 13 rebounds, Paquet pulled in nine, Bayne and Miller both ended with five and Gudeman had one. Gudeman led the game with four steals. 

Women's basketball starts off the season after a hard fought game at 1-0 as De Anza fell to 0-3. The Bulldogs continue the De Anza Winter Classic tomorrow Nov. 8, against Chabot college at 5:00 PM.
