
Women's Basketball Upsets Long Beach to Head to the Second Round of SoCal Regional Playoffs
The Allan Hancock College women's basketball team has made it to the second round of the California Community College Athletics Association's (CCCAA) Southern California Regionals after upsetting No. 14 Long Beach City College 70-66. It is the Bulldog's first play-off win under Head Coach Cary Nerelli. The Bulldogs move on to face a familiar conference opponent in the No. 3 seed Ventura College. Ventura ended the season at 19-7 and finished second in conference play at 5-3 which was good enough for a first-round bye. Earlier in the season, Hancock earned a hard-fought win against Ventura for the first time in nearly 30 years defeating them 74-64. The Bulldogs and the Pirates split the season series 1-1.
Hancock started the game against Long Beach strong going up by seven at halftime 32-25. Long Beach cut the lead down to three by the end of the third outscoring Hancock 27-23. The Bulldogs however went on to outscore Long Beach 15-14 in the fourth to finish the game with a four point margin 70-66.
Long Beach ended with a better night shooting. They hit 45 percent of their shots from the field and 42 percent from three-point range. The Bulldogs shot 42 and 36 percent respectively. The deciding factor for the game was team fouling. Long Beach ended the game with 16 and Hancock ended with 10. The Bulldogs made up the shooting percentage difference at the charity stripe going 15-19. Long Beach only went 4-8.
Freshman Jayci Bayne led the team in scoring with 24 points, picked up three rebounds and two assists. Milan McGary scored 16 as well as picked up three rebounds, assists, and steals. Alijah Paquet scored 15 and pulled in five rebounds. Sarah Gudeman scored six and grabbed a team high six rebounds. Aryana Gonzales scored nine and acted as the Bulldog's floor general for the night picking up a game high seven assists and four steals.
