Western State Conference Names Bramble Athlete of the Week

After making a splash in the program's first-ever swim meet, Allan Hancock College swimmer Leanna Bramble has been named the Western State Conference Female Athlete of the Week.

The Orcutt Academy graduate won the individual title at the Western State Conference Pentathlon hosted by Ventura College last Saturday. The meet was the first competition for Hancock's women's swim program.  During the pentathlon, swimmers competed in five separate events and their times were combined to find an overall winner.

Bramble won four events and set five school records. She took first in the 100 yard butterfly (1:01.43), the 100 yard freestyle (55.61 seconds), the 100 yard breaststroke (1:06.44), and the 100 yard individual medley (1:03.09). The only event she did not win, the 100 back, she finished third (1:05.12). She earned 96 total points and finished with a combined time of 5:11.69.

Bramble won the title by nearly eight seconds over the second place finisher. Nearly 100 women competed in the pentathlon.

"I was shocked at how well I swam all five events. I have never done that before, especially in the butterfly. It felt so great to have my hard work these last few months pay off," said Bramble.

Hancock finished in third place overall.

"The meet not only gave myself more confidence, but it also gave the entire team a boost. We proved that we belong and we can compete."

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, March 1, in a conference meet at LA Valley.
