A record three Allan Hancock College swimmers have qualified for the 2016 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Women's Swim and Diving Championships. Alexandria Kwong, Madalena Diaz and Rebecca Gonzalez, all freshmen, will represent the Bulldogs and compete against the state's elite swimmers. The State Championships will take place Thursday, May 5, through Saturday, May 7, at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park.
Kwong qualified in the 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard butterfly. She won individual Western State Conference titles in all three events last week. The Orcutt Academy graduate set a conference record in the 200-backstroke with a time of 2:12.80, which ranks ninth out of the 18 state qualifiers in the event. Kwong's time in the 100-yard butterfly of 1:00.53 ranks eighth out of 21 qualifiers. The freshman's top time in the 200-fly of 2:17.26 is the ninth fastest in the field. She will compete Friday in the 100-fly, and in the remaining two events on Saturday.
Diaz qualified in three events. She will compete in the 500-yard freestyle on Thursday. Her top time of 5:25.41 ranks 13th out of the 22 qualifiers. The Pioneer Valley High School graduate will swim in the 400-yard individual medley on Friday. Diaz will close the championships on Saturday in the 1,650-yard freestyle event. Her time of 18:40.59 ranks eighth in the field of 17.
Gonzalez, a Nipomo High School graduate, will compete in the 100-yard breaststroke on Friday and in the 200-yard breaststroke on Saturday. The freshman ranks 18th in the 100, and 16th in the 200.
The format of the State Championships includes preliminary heats in the morning for each event, with the finals in the evening. There is only a final in the 1,650-freestyle event.
Leanna Bramble represented the Bulldogs during the 2014 and 2015 CCCAA State Championships. The Orcutt Academy graduate competed in three events each year, and finished in the top 10 in five of her six events. Each year, Bramble earned enough points to help Hancock finish in the top 25 out of nearly 40 participating schools.
