Kwong Finishes Fourth and Diaz Fourteenth at State Championships
Alexandria Kwong tied a program record with a fourth place finish in the 100-yard butterfly at the CCCAA State Championships. She broke her own school record by nearly two seconds with a time of 58.98 seconds.
(Monterey Park, CA) Allan Hancock College swimmer Alexandria Kwong finished fourth and broke her own school record in the women's 100-yard butterfly championship final on Friday during the 2016 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at East Los Angeles College. Kwong's fourth-place finish tied Leanna Bramble for the best finish ever by a Hancock swimmer at a state meet. Bramble finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 2015.
Kwong broke her own school record by nearly two seconds by touching the wall in 58.98 seconds. She finished fifth in the morning's preliminary round to qualify for the championship final. The Orcutt Academy graduate entered the state meet with the eighth-fastest time in the field of 1:00.53.
Madalena Diaz finished 14th overall in the women's 400-yard individual medley with a sixth place finish during the consolation final on Friday. The Pioneer Valley High School graduate was clocked in 4:56.08 to better the school record she set during the morning's preliminary round by two seconds. Diaz finished 13th in the 500-yard freestyle final on Thursday with a time of 5:26.18.
Rebecca Gonzalez finished 17th in the 100-yard breaststroke preliminary heats in the morning. Her time of 1:11.98 was 0.12 of a second faster than her previous season-best time. The Nipomo High School graduate missed qualifying for the evening's consolation finals by .38 of a second.
All three Bulldogs will be in action on Saturday, the third and final day of the meet. Diaz will compete in the 1,650-yard freestyle, Gonzalez will swim the 200-yard breaststroke, and Kwong will compete in the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard butterfly.
More than 40 teams are competing at this year's championships.
