Diaz and Kwong Finish in Top 10 During Final Day of State Meet, Hancock Finishes 18th out of 42 Overall
Madalena Diaz came in seventh and Alexandria Kwong earned two Top 11 finishes, all with record-breaking times, to lead the Allan Hancock College women's swim team to a program-best 18th place finish at the California Community Colleges Athletics Association (CCCAA) 2016 Swimming and Diving Championships. The three-day meet came to close Saturday at East Los Angeles College.
Diaz finished seventh in the women's 1,650-yard freestyle final with a time of 18:34.83 to earn 12 points for Hancock in the team standings. The Pioneer Valley High School graduate broke her previous best time by six seconds. The freshman earned a total of 19 points during the three-day meet. Diaz finished 13th in the 500-yard freestyle and 14th in the 400-yard individual medley. She set improved her school record in all three events.
Kwong followed her fourth place finish on Friday in the 100-yard butterfly, with a ninth place finish in the 200-yard backstroke and 11th place effort in the 200-yard butterfly on Saturday. The freshman won the consolation final in the 200-back and broke her personal best by three seconds with a time of 2:14.07. She also set a new school record in the 200-fly with a time of 2:12.34. Kwong re-broke three school records, and earned a total of 29 team points on the weekend.
Rebecca Gonzalez finished 22nd in the preliminary heats in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:47.60. Earlier in the week, the freshman just missed qualifying for the finals with a 17th place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a personal-best time of 1:11.98.
Hancock finished 48 points and tied with American River College for 18th place in the team standings out of 42 teams. The Bulldogs improved their previous best showing at the state meeting by five spots. Leanna Bramble led Hancock to 23rd place in 2014 and 2015.
Orange Coast College won the state title with 569 points. Sierra, Santa Rosa and Santa Barbara City rounded out the top four. Hancock finished second out of seven Western State Conference teams that competed at the meet.
