River Stevens Tops the State in Batting, Accepts Offer to Cal State Fullerton

In just one season with the Bulldogs River Stevens has made his mark, finishing with the top batting average in the state and simultaneously breaking the school record for the best batting average in a single season with an impressive .449.

“River is a disciplined, patient hitter with a good knowledge of the strike zone,” said Hancock head coach Chris Stevens.

River Stevens also had the state’s second highest on-base percentage a .530. He finished the season with 61 hits in 136 at bats with 33 runs and 27 RBI’s.

“He was a leader by example and carried a lot of our offensive responsibility on his shoulders,” Chris Stevens said. “At the same time I think he made his teammates better.”

In a pinch, teams would pitch around him and end up pitching to Jacob Cano instead, Chris Stevens said. Cano finished the season with a .390 batting average, 53 hits and 31 runs scored.

“Pick your poison, because one of them was going to get you,” Chris Stevens said.

River Stevens spent his freshman year at Palomar College in San Marcos, Calif. where he suffered an injury midway through the season. He has thrived at Hancock under the direction of his uncle, Chris Stevens, and has accepted a scholarship to play for the Titans baseball team at California State University Fullerton.
