River Stevens is Drafted in Ninth Round by San Diego Padres

River Stevens, All-American player for the Allan Hancock College 2012 baseball team, has been drafted in the ninth round by the San Diego Padres.

“It’s every baseball player’s dream to be drafted by a major league team and River is living the dream today,” said Hancock head coach Chris Stevens.

River Stevens finished with the top batting average in the state this season, breaking the school record for the best batting average in a single season with an impressive .449. He also had the state’s second highest on-base percentage a .530. He finished the season with 61 hits in 136 at bats with 33 runs and 27 RBI’s.

“Being at Hancock this last season has helped me improve both my mental and physical game,” River Stevens said. “Chris Stevens taught me how to play smarter and that’s why I got noticed this season.”

Before the draft, River Stevens had received multiple offers from four-year colleges and had verbally committed to play for the Titans baseball team at California State University Fullerton. Now, River Stevens’ plans have changed. He will be returning to the Central Coast before moving to Peoria, Ariz. to play for the Padres’ Rookie League team, the Arizona League Padres.

River Stevens said he will move on with fond memories of Hancock and especially his teammates.

“I had great teammates,” River Stevens said. “Jacob Cano, Ryan Bower, Preston Thomas and all of my teammates, really pushed me to keep working hard and never give up.”
