Hancock Scores Revenge, Defeats Porterville 7-3 for Sixth Straight Win

Marc Baker and two relievers combined on a one-hitter and Cameron Ketchen clubbed the team's first home run of the season as the Allan Hancock College baseball team avenged its only loss of the season with a 7-3 win over Porterville on Saturday at John Osborne Field.

The Bulldogs finished their home stand a perfect 6-0 and improved to 8-1 on the season. They are riding their first six-game winning streak since April 2011.

Baker did not allow a hit until the sixth inning. The Nipomo High School graduate walked five hitters and struck out four in six innings to earn the victory. The sophomore improved to 2-0 on the season.

Hancock got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Ryan Welker and Ketchen drew back-to-back walks and scored on a triple from first baseman Felipe Gonzalez. The Santa Ynez High School graduate later scored on a RBI-double off the bat of Ryan Bendele. After Porterville scored twice in the second by virtue of four walks issued by Baker, the Bulldogs added another run in the third when Welker scored from third on a double play grounder hit by Gonzalez. Hancock made it a 5-2 game in the fifth when Ketchen slugged a solo home run to right field.

Porterville scored once in the sixth to make it a 5-3 contest, but the Bulldogs added two more runs in the sixth inning when Evan Aguilar legged out a triple to drive in Zach Nyman. The Lompoc High School graduate later scored on a ball misplayed by the center fielder.

Zack Skipper threw two shutout innings. The left-hander struck out three and issued two walks. He has not allowed a run in 5 innings of relief with 7 strikeouts this season. St. Joseph High School graduate John Drury threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close out the victory for the Bulldogs. Drury fanned two in the frame.

Hancock outhit Porterville 9-3. Ketchen went 2 for 3 with a home run and RBI. Gonzalez, Aguilar, Nyman, Bendele, Ron Regalado, Brooks Fages and Welker each added one hit.

The Bulldogs face a three-game road trip next week starting on Thursday, Feb.20, at Cypress (8-2), at 2 p.m. They'll play Fullerton (5-3), Friday at 1 p.m., before battling Cypress again on Saturday at 11 a.m. Cypress was ranked #1 in the Southern California Regional preseason poll.
