Men's Basketball Team Hosts Playoff Game Wed. Feb. 22

The Allan Hancock College men’s basketball team has earned a spot in the state playoffs for the second season in a row. The Bulldogs are seeded 16th in the California Community College Athletic Association playoffs and will host 17th seed Imperial Valley College on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m.

In addition to back-to-back appearances in the state playoffs, the Bulldogs had four players named All-Conference. Jordan O'Byrne (Lompoc ), Abraham Millsap (St. Thomas More Prep) and Taylor Pruett (Arroyo Grande) were named first team, and Andrew Douby (St. Thomas Moore Prep) received honorable mention.

“I don’t know of any team that has finished third and had three players named first team and one player who only missed by one vote,” said head coach Ralph Gorton. “This is an acknowledgement of the level of talent on our team this season.”

Plagued by injuries halfway through their season, the Bulldogs finished 20-9 overall and ranked third in the Western State Conference North. The Imperial Valley Arabs were 19-8 and finished in second place in the Pacific Coast Conference. The winner of this match up will travel to Glendora, Calif. to play Citrus College, champions of the Western State Conference South and the number one seeded team in the state.

According to coach Gorton, if the Bulldogs play to the best of their ability Wednesday night then they’re more than ready to travel to Citrus College.

“If we’re healthy then we’re as good as any team in the state and if our guys perform to the level they’re capable of then nobody can beat us,” he said.

The Bulldogs take to the court at 7 p.m. at the Joe White Memorial Gymnasium. Tickets to the CCCA state tournament are available at the door and are \$8 for general admission and \$5 for students, staff, seniors and children ages 12 and under.
