Cuesta Tops Hancock in Consolation Game at Bulldog Classic

Despite a game-high 29 points from Teyvon Myers, the Allan Hancock College men's basketball team fell 74-67 to rival Cuesta College in the consolation game at the annual Bulldog Classic on Monday in Joe White Memorial Stadium.

The Bulldogs dropped to 9-8 after dropping their first meeting of the season with their rivals from Cuesta College. The Cougars improved to 10-7.

Myers made 10 of his 23 shots from the floor, including 4 of 11 from 3-point range. The freshman added three assists and five rebounds. Myers scored 15 points in the first half to give the Bulldogs a 34-33 lead at intermission. The guard could not find his shot during a critical stretch of the second half that saw the Cougars take control of the game.

Oscar Pedroso, Alex Igual and Brett Hartshorne each scored 16 or more points to lead the Cougars. Pedroso finished with a team-high 20 points on 5 for 13 shooting. The sophomore averaged 22.3 points in the Cougars' three-games to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team. 

Hancock's Josh Varney scored two-straight buckets to pull the Bulldogs even with Cuesta 53-53 with 8:31 to go in the game. Igual answered with a layup and a 3-point bucket to give Cuesta the lead for good at 58-33. Igual, who is from Barcelona, Spain, scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half, while Hartshorne erupted for 15 of his 18 points in the final 20 minutes of the game. 

Cuesta made 25 of its 55 shots from the floor for a 45.4 percent mark. The Cougars hit 66.7 percent of their free throw attempts by making 18 of 27. Cuesta also outrebounded the Bulldogs 36-31, behind a 12-8 advantage on offensive rebounds.

Isaiah Hicks scored 12 points for Hancock when he made 4 of his 6 shots from the floor and all 4 of his free throws. DJ Billingsley led Hancock with 8 rebounds. Mohammed Ali Ben Ammar led Cuesta with 8 boards.  Kadeem Minor added 8 points.

The Bulldogs shot 43.6 percent from the floor with a 24 for 55 showing.

The Central Coast rivals meet again at Hancock on Jan.11 in a Western State Conference game. The contest is set to start at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs open WSC play on Wednesday, Jan.8, at Moorpark.
