Hancock Men Lose Conference Battle at Moorpark 101-88

Marcellus Garrick and Kevawn Lord each scored 17 points, and Erik Kinnebrew recorded his third double-double, but the Allan Hancock College men's basketball team could not overcome a sluggish start and lost 101-88 to Moorpark College on Wednesday evening. The Bulldogs dropped to 0-2 in Western State Conference play and 10-12 overall. The Raiders improved to 1-1 in conference and 7-10 on the season.  

The Raiders scored the first 14 points of the game and led 20-4 about six minutes into the game. Hancock cut the deficit to nine by intermission, but could not get any closer in the second half. Moorpark hit eight 3-pointers in the first half and sank 14 on the night on 25 attempts from beyond-the-arc.

Garrick hit 6-of-15 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the free-throw line to finish with 17 points, his 16th game this season with 10 or more points. The sophomore added eight rebounds, including four on the offensive end. Lord came off the bench to score 17 points by hitting 5-of-6 from the floor and 7-of-9 on free throws. Kinnebrew hit 5-of-10 from the floor and all five of his free throws to finish with 15 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots.

Deon Whiteside went 5-for-11 from the floor and 4-for-6 from the line to finish with 14 points and eight rebounds. Freshman point guard Nolan Willett added 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

For the game, Hancock shot 47 percent by sinking 29 of its 62 shots. The Bulldogs hit 29 of their 39 free throws or 74 percent. They held the edge on rebounds with 43 total boards, including 16 offensive rebounds. Moorpark had 30 rebounds on the night. 

The big difference in the game was Moorpark shot 54 percent from the field overall, and made 14-of-25 3-point shots. Hancock went 1-for-11 from 3-point range.

Eight Raiders hit at least one 3-point bucket, including Kaden Young, who had five triples on his way to a game-high 19 points. Khiry Williams added 14 points.  The Raiders led from start to finish and had 11 players score at least three points, including four in double-digits.

The Bulldogs will look to get back on track at home Saturday, January 21, at 3 p.m. when Santa Barbara City College visits Joe White Memorial Gymnasium.
