Hancock Men Look to Continue Winning Ways in Second Half of Conference Schedule, Travel to Ventura Saturday

The men's basketball finished the first half of Western State Conference play with two straight wins. Hancock enters the week 2-3 in conference action and 12-13 overall. Hancock is in a three-way tie for third place with Oxnard and Santa Barbara. The Bulldogs will return to action Saturday, February 4, at Ventura College, at 5 p.m.

Last week, Hancock won at first place Cuesta 55-54 to hand the Cougars their first loss of the season. The Bulldogs followed that with a 73-62 victory at home against Oxnard. Sophomore Marcellus Garrick (Westwood HS) led the Bulldogs with 20 points and nine rebounds against the Cougars. He followed that up with a career-best 23 points against the Condors. Freshman forward Erik Kinnebrew (Middlebrooks) recorded two double-doubles and flirted with triple-doubles last week. He had 14 points, 16 rebounds, and seven assists against Cuesta. Kinnebrew  followed that up with 14 points, 13 rebounds, and eight assists against Oxnard. Sophomore forward Kevawn Lord (West Side HS) scored 13 of his 19 points against Oxnard in the second half to help the Bulldogs down the stretch. Point guard Nolan Willett (JSerra Catholic) had seven points and eight assists against Cuesta.

Overall, Garrick is the team's leading scorer at 14.6 points per game, followed by Lord at 10.4, and Whiteside at 9.2 points per game.

Ventura and Cuesta are tied for first at 4-1 in conference. The Pirates are 13-11 overall and riding a three-game winning streak. The Pirates came out red-hot against Hancock on January 14. The Pirates won 78-59 behind 20 points and 12 rebounds from Vida Faniel, 14 points from Trevor LaCount, and 14 points and 11 assists by Eddie Cowan. Garrick led the Bulldogs with 17 points against the Pirates. Lord added 11 points off the bench, and Dominic Jackson (NW Career Academy) added 10 points. Overall, Cordel Hankerson is the team's top scorer at 17.6 points, followed by Isiah Reyes at 14.2 points per game.
