de Comarmond and General Sprint to Titles, Hancock Finishes Sixth for Best Showing at WSC Championships in 29 Years

Steven de Comarmond won the 110 meter high hurdles and Jonathon General sprinted to the 100 meter dash title to lead the Allan Hancock College men's track and field team to a sixth place finish out of 10 teams at the Western State Conference Championships on Friday at Antelope Valley College. They earned the first individual conference titles by a Hancock male athlete since Jesus Solis won the 10,000 meter run in 2006.

The sixth place finish was the program's best finish at a conference meet in the 13-year reign of head coach Louie Quintana. It also marked the program's best finish in the Western State Conference since the Bulldogs finished fifth in 1985 when there were only seven teams in the league.

The College of the Canyons men earned their first WSC championship with 145 points. West Los Angeles finished second with 139, followed by Glendale (131.5), Santa Barbara (95.5) in fourth, Cuesta in fifth with 62 points and Hancock in sixth with 57.5 points. Santa Monica (47), Antelope Valley (35), Ventura (33.5) and Bakersfield (16) round out the final four teams.

de Comarmond, a sophomore and Santa Maria High School graduate, enjoyed an all-around stellar performance. He won the 110 high hurdles with a time of 15.56 seconds, finished second in the 200 meter dash at 22.72 seconds, and finished fifth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 50.14 seconds. He also ran on the 4x100 meter relay team that came in sixth with a time of 44.39seconds.

General won the 100 meter dash with a season-best time of 10.85 seconds.

Elijah Holt, an Arroyo Grande High School alumnus, finished eighth in 16.88 seconds in the 110 high hurdles final.

Pioneer Valley High School graduate Bruce Detter, a sophomore, followed his third place finish in the discus throw last week with a second place finish in the hammer throw with a toss of 126 feet, four inches. Gregory Uzueta, a Nipomo High School alumnus, placed tenth in the hammer with a mark of 83-2. Uzueta also placed fifth in the discus last week. Detter also finished seventh on Friday in the shot put with a top mark of 38-2.

Hancock finished sixth overall despite losing a few key athletes to academic ineligibility the day before the race.

General, Detter, Uzueta and De Comarmond qualified for next Saturday's Southern California Preliminaries at Riverside City College.
