Hancock Women Drop WSC Opener 65-52 at Moorpark

Despite 14 points from both Emma Weinreich and Justine Roland, the Allan Hancock College women's basketball team lost 65-52 at Moorpark in their Western State Conference opener on Wednesday evening.

The Bulldogs are off to a 0-1 start in conference and dropped to 10-5 overall. Moorpark improved to 1-0 in WSC play and 10-7 on the season.

Hancock shot 34 percent from the floor and made just one of its 10 shots from 3-point range. Moorpark shot 51 percent on 25 for 49 shooting on the night and made 6 of its 15 shots from beyond the arc for a 40 percent clip.

The Bulldogs trailed 29-24 at halftime, but scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 31-29 lead. However, the Raiders regained control and outscored Hancock 36-28 in the second half.

Weinreich, a sophomore and Arroyo Grande High School graduate, made 5 of her 11 shots form the floor and went 4 for 6 from the free throw line. She dished out a team-high four assists. Roland, a sophomore forward from Righetti High, went 5 for 13 from the field and made all four of her free throws. Both Weinreich and Roland pulled down 6 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs.

Freshman Nicole DeLa Guerra added nine points and three steals off the bench for Hancock. The Bulldogs' leading scorer headed into the game, Ali Rodriguez, was held to six points. The freshman from Pioneer Valley High, was 2 for 8 from the floor and 1 for 5 from beyond-the-arc. Davina J. Valerio added 6 points, all of those came from the charity stripe.

Three Moorpark players scored 12 or more points in the victory. Ashley Ontiveros poured in a game-high 26 points. The freshman guard was 9 for 16 from the floor, but hit 5 of her 10 shots from 3-point range. Sophomore Lindsay Nuener added 15 points to go with eight assists. Riley Abraham recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Raiders held the edge in rebounds at 33 to 32 and recorded 21 assists to Hancock's 13. 

Hancock has lost 12-straight WSC games. 

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday when they host Central Coast rival Cuesta (0-1,15-3). The Cougars started the week ranked 12th in the state headed into their conference opener at home against Ventura, the 23-time defending WSC champion and No.1 ranked team in the state.  Ventura (1-0, 16-3) defeated Cuesta 76-54 on Wednesday.

The Cuesta and Hancock women tip off at 3 p.m., in Joe White Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday, Jan.11. The men follow at 5 p.m.
