Hancock Women Defeat Las Positas 71-45 to Open Cuesta Tournament

Syenna Ramirez, Marissa Torres, Kelly McClain and Ashley Daher each scored 11 or more points to lead the Allan Hancock College women's basketball team to its fourth straight win, a 71-45 victory over Las Positas to open a tournament hosted by Cuesta College on Thursday. The Bulldogs improved to 5-1, while the Hawks fell to 5-2.

Torres scored eight points in the first quarter to help the Bulldogs carry a 16-15 lead after the first 10 minutes. Hancock outscored the Hawks 23-8 in the second quarter behind seven more from Torres and eight from Ramirez to carry a 39-23 lead into halftime.

Ramirez, a freshman and St. Joseph High School graduate, added 10 more in the third quarter for the Bulldogs. Hancock outscored the Hawks 32-22 in the second half to cruise to a 26-point win.

Ramirez led all players with 19 points. She made seven of 16 shots from the floor and five of six from the free throw line. The freshman guard pulled down six rebounds and dished out a career-high seven assists.

Torres sank six of her 10 shots from the floor, including three of five from three-point range. The Templeton High School graduate added a career-high seven boards.

McClain scored a career-best 14 points on seven for 11 shooting. The freshman added nine rebounds, three steals and a career-high three blocks.

Daher, a sophomore forward, drained five of seven from the floor to finish with 11 points, a season-high eight rebounds and four steals.

Hancock finished with 15 steals and 14 assists. The Bulldogs made 29 of their 60 shots from the field or 48 percent. They also made four of their nine three-point shots and sank nine of their 12 free throws.

Destinee Garcia added five points three rebounds and three steals for Hancock.

Cayla Naya led the Hawks with 12 points.

The Bulldogs advanced to the championship bracket where they will play at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at Cuesta. They will face the winner of Thursday evening's game between Monterey College and LA Pierce.
