Allan Hancock College Women's Basketball Falls to College of the Sequoias in Home Opener

Freshmen Alijah Paquet and Jayci Bayne combined for 41 points, but the Allan Hancock College women's basketball team fell to the College of the Sequoias Giants 71-66 in their home opener Wednesday evening. Sequoias come into the season ranked fifth in the state following their successful 2018-19 season. Following the loss, the Lady Bulldogs fell to 1-3 and the Giants improved to 3-1. 

Bayne led the team in points with 21 on 8-for-13 shooting with one coming from outside the three-point arc, and hitting four of her six free throw attempts. Bayne finished with four rebounds, two assists, a steal, and the team's sole shot block in the loss. 

Paquet scored 20 points after going 7-for-14 from the field with four of those coming from outside the three-point arc, as well as going two-for-two from the charity stripe. Paquet came down with five rebounds, and picked up three assists and steals. 

Hancock kept up with the Sequoias shooting game for most of the game and even led the Giants by five in the first half. Hancock shot 47 percent on 23-for-49 shooting in the game compared to the Sequoias 37 percent on 27-for-74 shooting. Both teams were dead even from three point range with six a piece. The Giants came up with twenty offensive rebounds during the game compared to Hancock's four, giving Sequoias more second and third chance opportunities under the basket. The Giants led the Bulldogs in fouls 21-13, but Hancock could not capitalize from the charity stripe by only shooting 68 percent.

Hancock pulled in more defensive rebounds that Sequoias 28-23 and forced several turnovers in the defensive zone. The giants however ended the game leading the Bulldogs 43-32 in rebounds and 11-5 in steals. 

Each team moved the ball well with Hancock earning 12 assists and Sequoias coming up with 13. 

Five Bulldogs scored at least two points in the contest with Bayne coming up with 21, Paquet earning 20, Milan McGary scored 15, Maddie Miller scored eight, and Jordan Stone with two. 

Miller led the Bulldogs defensively with nine rebounds, Paquet pulled in 5, and McGary and Bayne each had four. Paquet led the team in steals with three, as well as tied for lead with Sarah Gudeman in assists at three.
