Cypress Rallies Late to Stun Hancock 6-5

Will Dowell threw a solid six innings for the Allan Hancock College baseball team, but an eighth-inning rally by Cypress doomed the Bulldogs in a 6-5 loss Saturday afternoon. Hancock, which built a 4-0 lead, dropped its second game in three days to Cypress and third in a row to fall to 4-9 overall. Cypress improved to 9-0 at home and 12-2 overall.

Hancock opened the scoring with a four-run first inning. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with nobody out after Josh Harmonay singled, Daniel Curiel walked, and Quinntin Perez singled to right. With Brendan Gomez at the plate, Harmonay sprinted home and scored on a wild pitch to give Hancock a 1-0 lead. Gomez promptly singled to right to score Curiel and put Hancock ahead 2-0. Gomez later stole second and Walker Armstrong walked to reload the bases. Brandon Davis grounded into a fielder's choice that forced Armstrong and second, but allowed Perez to score to make it 3-0 Bulldogs. Kyle von Tillow capped the four-run inning with a RBI-single to right.

Cypress threatened in the third and loaded the bases with one out. However, Dowell induced a double play to escape the threat. The Chargers scored one run against Dowell in the sixth to climb to within 4-1.

The Bulldogs regained a four-run advantage when pinch hitter Wyatt Coll singled to center to drive in Ryan Peinado to give the Bulldogs a 5-1 lead.

Freshman Dylan Maiden replaced Dowell on the mound and threw a shutout seventh innings. However, he got into trouble in the seventh when he loaded the bases with one out. A sacrifice fly, wild pitch and RBI-single later and Cypress climbed to within 5-4 with two outs. Phillip Martin was summoned from the bullpen with two outs and one runner on, when pinch hitter Matt Schmidt clubbed a two-run home run to give the Chargers their first lead of the game 6-5.

The Bulldogs threatened in the top of the ninth when Harmonay and Gomez singled, but Peinado lined out to the shortstop for the final out of the game.

Harmonay went 3-for-5 to lead the Bulldogs' 11-hit attack. Perez, Gomez and von Tillow had two hits apiece. Curiel hit a double and stole two bases.
Dowell received a no decision after he scattered six hits and one walk over six innings. The freshman allowed one run and struck out one. Maiden allowed four runs and three hits in 1 2/3 innings. He struck out two. Martin took the loss to fall to 0-1 after he allowed one run and one hit in 1/3 of an inning.

Hancock will return home to host West Hills Coalinga on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m.
