Offense Erupts as Hancock Baseball Knocks Off No. 13 Fresno 14-7 at AHC Spring Classic

Josh Harmonay, Chad Jones and Ryan Peinado had four hits each to lead the Allan Hancock College baseball team to a 14-7 upset over Fresno City College, the No. 13 team in the state, Wednesday during day two of the AHC Spring Classic. The Bulldogs, who lost a 10-5 eighth-inning lead Tuesday, rebounded to improve to 13-20. The Rams fell to 21-12.

Hancock finished with 18 hits as four players had multiple hits. Harmonay went 4-for-5 with two runs and 2 RBI. Walker Armstrong went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Jones was 4-for-4, scored four times and drove in one run. Peinado, the sophomore third baseman, went 4-for-4 with two runs and 2 RBI. Hancock also drew eight walks.  

Sophomore pitcher Wyatt Standley earned the win with 6 2/3 innings of solid relief. The right-hander allowed three hits, one run, walked three, and fanned a career-high six hitters. Evan Sonny started for the Bulldogs. He allowed 10 hits, six runs, one walk and struck out one hitter.

Fresno scored one in the first to take the early lead. The Bulldogs rallied for three in the second on a RBI-single from Peinado and a two-run single by Coll. Fresno regained the lead with a five-run third inning against Sonny to build a 6-3 lead.

The Bulldogs started to chip away at the deficit. Armstrong laced a RBI-double in the third, and Harmonay crushed a two-run double in the fourth to tie it up at 6-6. Fresno City regained the lead with a solo-home run in the fifth. The Bulldogs regained control with a three-run fifth when Nash Ackerman hit a RBI-double and later scored on a passed ball. With an 9-7 lead headed into the sixth, the Bulldogs piled on four more runs as Chris Taitague legged out a two-run triple, Jones added a RBI-double, and Peinado lined a base hit to drive in another run to give Hancock a 13-7 lead.  Armstrong rolled into a double play in the seventh that allowed Coll to score from third for Hancock's final run of the game.

The third and final day of the classic will be Wednesday. All eight teams will be in action on four different fields. Hancock will host Cerritos. Cuesta will host Merced.  East LA will battle Canyons at Elks Field, and Fresno will face Cypress at Sinsheimer Stadium. All four games begin at noon.
