Fueled by Dominant Second Half, Bulldogs Beat West Valley 78-64 to Close Cuesta Tournament

Sophomores Shane Carney, Marcellus Garrick and Dominic Jackson erupted to score a combined 40 points in the second half to lead the Allan Hancock College men's basketball team to a 78-64 come-from-behind win over West Valley on Sunday to close out a three-day tournament at Cuesta College. The Bulldogs improved to 2-1 after they erased a deficit at halftime for the second straight day. Hancock outscored West Valley 51-29 in the final 20 minutes.

 

Carney scored 16 of his career-high 25 points in the second half to help Hancock erase a 35-27 half time deficit. The sophomore guard made 7 of his 13 shots from the field, including four of seven from 3-point range. Carney also sank 7 of 8 free throws. Carney finished with five rebounds, four assists and four steals.

 

Garrick went 4-for-7 from 3-point territory and sank 7 of his 10 shots from the field. The sophomore also made all four of his free throws to finish with a career-best 22 points. He also pulled down four rebounds and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Garrick averaged 16 points in the three games.

 

Jackson scored all 12 of his points in the second half. He made 4 of his 6 shots from the floor, and sank four free throws. The six-foot-eight center who transferred to Hancock from Central Wyoming College chipped in six rebounds and had two steals.

 

Kevawn Lord, a sophomore transfer from Cuesta, added 13 points and two steals for Hancock.

 

Hancock sank 23 of its 44 shots form the field, including nine of 19 from 3-point territory. The Bulldogs also made 23 of their 29 free throws, and finished with 11 steals.

 

The Bulldogs will return to action, Thursday, November 10, when they open a tournament hosted by Chabot College against Cosumnes River College at 3 p.m.
