Nicolini Finishes at Even Par, Qualifies for CCCAA State Championships

Fueled by a final round two-under par, sophomore Alejandro Nicolini qualified for the CCCAA Men's Golf State Championships. Nicolini carded an overall score of 144 to tie for 14th place in the individual standings during the 36-hole Southern California Championships at Olivas Park Links in Ventura on Monday.

Nicolini shot a two-over 74 during the first round and came back in the afternoon to fire a 70 to finish at even par overall.

Hancock freshman Robert Zimkowski carded an 82 and 74 for a total score of 156. Sophomore Shawn Brackett shot a 79 and 78 to finish with 157. They missed the cut for state by 12 and 13 strokes respectively.

Western State Conference champion College of the Canyons shot a blistering 346 in the first round and 364 in the second round to win the SoCal title with an overall score of 710. Santa Barbara finished second with a total score of 723. College of the Desert finished third in the team standings at 725, while Riverside placed fourth with a 733. Fellow WSC squad Ventura came in eighth with a 767. The top four teams qualified for the State Championships.

Brad Patton of Santa Barbara won the individual medalist honor with a seven-under 137. He edged Canyons' Eric Kim by one stroke. Thirteen golfers shot below par for the day. Nicolini and three others shot even-par. 

The top six individuals who did not play for a team that finished in the top four qualified for the 36-hole State Championship, which will take place Monday, May 11, at the Kings River Golf and Country Club in Kingsburg, which is outside of Fresno.

Nicolini tied for sixth at the Western State Conference Championships to qualify for SoCal Regionals with a one-over par 145. He finished fifth in the conference and led the Bulldogs with an average round of 74.58.
