Three Bulldogs Win Events at WSC North Meet, Hancock Men Finish Second

Three Bulldogs combined to win four events to lead the Allan Hancock College men's track and field team to a second place finish in the Western State Conference North meet on a rainy and windy Friday at Bakersfield College.

The Canyon men won with 198 points. Hancock finished second with 103 points followed by Santa Barbara (87), Ventura (81), Cuesta (45) and Bakersfield (20).

Sophomore thrower Bruce Detter won two events. The Pioneer Valley High School graduate won the discus throw with a top mark of 114 feet, 11 inches, as well as the hammer throw with a top mark of 102-6. He finished second in the shot put with a throw of 38 feet, six inches.  Gregory Uzueta, a Nipomo High School product, came in third in the discus at 100-7 and fourth in the hammer throw with a top mark of 72-11. He also finished sixth in the shot put with a mark of 34-6 and fifth in the javelin with a top throw of 124 feet. Uzueta earned 13 points, while Detter earned 28.

Joshua Thornton finished second in the 100-meter dash when he was clocked in 11.26 seconds. Steven DeComarmond finished third in the 100-meter dash at 11.27 seconds. In the men's 110-meter high hurdles, DeComarmond, a Santa Maria High School graduate, finished first in 16.80 seconds and freshman Elijah Holt crossed second in 17.29 seconds.

Leroy Johnson won the men's triple jump event with a top mark of 45-2.

Eric Grant came in fourth in the long jump with a top jump of 18 feet, 1.75 inches.

A Hancock team of Eric Grant, DeComarmond, Holt and Thornton came in second in the 4x100 relay with a time of 44.99 seconds.

On the women's side, the Hancock women finished sixth with six points. Canyons won with 154 points, followed by Bakersfield (135.5), Ventura (124), Santa Barbara (116) and Cuesta (73).

Freshman Cassandra Bantz finished fifth in the women's pole vault with a clearance of seven feet to earn two points for Hancock. Sylvana Swain, a sophomore, finished fourth in the triple jump with a top mark of 27 feet, 5.5 inches.

Hancock track returns to Bakersfield on Friday, March 7 for the Bakersfield Relays.
