First Place Finishes by Kwong and Diaz Lead Hancock Swimming to Second Place Finish at WSC#2

Dria Kwong won two events, Maddie Diaz took one, and three other Allan Hancock College women's swimmers placed in the top three in individual events during the second Western State Conference meet of the season. The Bulldogs finished second overall out of five teams with 104 total points during the meet hosted by L.A. Valley Friday afternoon. Cuesta finished first with 126 points, while Canyons placed third with 75, followed by L.A. Valley with 71 and Santa Monica with 62 points.

Kwong finished first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:17.43. The three-time conference champion also won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.84. She earned nine points for each first place finish to secure 18 total points. 

Diaz took first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:41.67. The sophomore also finished runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle by finishing in 2:12.32 to earn seven points. The Pioneer Valley High School graduate racked up 16 total points. 

Sophomore Rebecca Gonzalez finished runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.49 to earn seven points.

Freshman Meagan Stevens earned 13 points with a third place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 12:12.15, and a second place effort in the 500 free by finishing in 6:00.80.  Ellyn Clardy finished third in the 200 free (2:16.17) and in the 100 free (1:00.53) to earn another 12 points for Hancock.

Stevens, Gonzalez, Kwong and Clardy teamed up to open the meet with a first place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:01.36 to earn 18 points. The Bulldogs finished eight seconds ahead of second place Santa Monica. 

The Bulldogs later finished fifth in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:59.02 to earn eight more relay points.

Nikki Gurgiolo (4), Makenna Blanco (5), Nohemi Hernandez (2), and Allie Shea (1) also earned points for the Bulldogs. 

The Bulldogs will host the third conference meet of the season Friday, March 31, at the Paul Nelson Aquatic Center in Santa Maria. The action will begin at 11 a.m.
