Stevens and Hernandez Finish in Top Five, Hancock Swimming Sits in Sixth at WSC Championships

Haylee Hernandez came in third in the women's 200-yard freestyle final and Meagan Stevens finished fifth in the 400-yard individual medley for the Allan Hancock College women's swimming and diving team at the 2018 Western State Conference Championships on Friday at Bakersfield College.

Stevens shaved three seconds off her previous personal best with a time of 5:10.86 to earn 14 points for the Bulldogs with a fifth-place finish. She finished eighth in the 500 freestyle final on Thursday. Oceana Heath placed ninth in the 400 IM to earn nine points by shaving eight seconds off her PR with a time of 5:37.27.

Hernandez followed her second-place effort in Thursday's 500-yard freestyle final with a third-place effort in the 200 free final. The Pioneer Valley High School graduate set a PR in the 200 final with a time of 2:02.76 to earn 16 points for the Hancock team total.

Sophomore Makena Blanco placed 12th in the 100-yard butterfly event. Blanco was clocked in 1:12.55 to earn five points for the Bulldogs. Blanco came in 13th Thursday in the 200 IM.

Mackenzie Coker finished 16th in the 100-yard backstroke event with a time of 1:15.65 to earn one point for the Bulldogs.

In relay events, Hancock finished seventh in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:03.95 to rack up another 24 points. The Bulldogs also teamed up to set a season-best time of 8:42.46 to finish third in the 800 freestyle relay to earn 32 more points.

After day two of the WSC Championships, the Bulldogs sit in sixth place in the team standings with 224 points, one point behind fifth place Santa Monica. Defending champion Santa Barbara City College climbed into first place with 423 points. Host Bakersfield sits in second overall with 372 points, followed by Cuesta with 317 and Ventura in fourth with 289 points. Citrus sits in seventh place with 199 points, followed by LA Valley with 177 points, Canyons with 133 points, and L.A. Pierce with 73 points.

Freshman Kailey Roux earned 37 points for the Bulldogs last weekend with a first-place finish in the 3-meter diving final and a second-place showing in the 1-meter final. The Orcutt Academy graduate became the first diver in program history to win a Western Conference Conference title.

The three-day meet concludes Saturday with six women's swimming events.
