Three Hancock Golfers Compete at Southern California Regionals

Three Allan Hancock College golfers saw their memorable 2019 seasons end during the 2019 Southern California Regional Championships at Los Serranos Golf Club in Chino Hills on Monday. The field of 67 golfers played two rounds, the par-72 North Course and the par-74 South Course.

Hancock sophomore Jett Rugg carded rounds of 79 and 90 for a total score of 169 strokes. Eddie Aldridge shot a 10-over 82 on the North Course and an 8-over 82 on the South Course. The freshman Bulldog fired an overall 164. Daniel Nelson finished with a total of 171 strokes. The Hancock freshman shot an 85 in the first round and an 86 on his final 18 holes.

The Hancock golfers were trying to become the first Bulldog to qualify for state since Alejandro Nicolini in 2015. 

College of the Canyons overcame a 13-stroke deficit after the first round to win the regional championship. Canyons won the regional title for the second straight year and seventh time overall. Mt. San Antonio College led by 13 strokes after the first 18 holes with a score of 347, but shot a 385 in the second round to finish with a total score of 732. Canyons finished with a total score of 726, after firing a 366 in the second round to win by six strokes. Santa Barbara City College finished third with 739 strokes, and Cypress placed fourth with 740, one shot ahead of fifth-place Orange Coast. Palomar finished sixth with 744 strokes, followed by Ventura, College of the Desert, and Bakersfield. The top-four teams and the six lowest scores by golfers not on state-qualifying teams move on to the 2019 CCCAA State Championships being played Monday, May 13, at Silverado Resort in Napa.

Jacob Montes (139) of Palomar, Myoung Kim (142), Orange Coast's Tyler Thurmond (143), Kyle Hazlett (146) from Palomar, and Ventura's Michael Ray (149) and Nick Burns (150) qualified for state as individuals.
