MEN'S SOCCER OPENS TOURNEY WITH A SHUTOUT
SANTA MARIA - The Allan Hancock College Bulldog men's soccer team scored a 3-0 shutout over San Joaquin Delta Community College in the opener for both teams in the 2004 AHC Soccer Tournament.
The Bulldogs scored early in the first half when John Boswell (Fr., Atascadero HS) headed in a long cross shot from Joaquin Martinez (Fr., Santa Maria HS) at the nine minute mark. Ten minutes later Eric Arciga (Fr., Santa Maria) scored on a chip pass from Jose Olivera (Fr., Santa Maria) to make it 2-0.
Arturo Guerrero (Fr., Righetti HS) would complete the scoring in the second half with a goal in the forty-eighth minute on a cross pass from Cristanos Perez (Fr., Santa Ynez HS). All three goal scorers celebrated their first goals of the season. The Bulldogs evened their season record at 1-1-0.
With the victory, AHC will next play Evergreen Valley Community College. Evergreen Valley and West Hills tied 1-1 in regulation, with Evergreen Valley moving into the winner's bracket on penalty kicks. Allan Hancock and Evergreen Valley will play Saturday, September 4 at 12 noon on Field One at the AHC campus. In another first round game, Taft shut out Ohlone 4-0.
Taft will take on the winner of Saturday's first game, a 9:00 a.m. first round game between Santa Barbara City College and Spokane (WA) Community College. The second round game will begin at 3:00 p.m. In another second round match-up, West Hills will take on San Joaquin at noon.
The tournament will conclude on Sunday, September 5, with the championship game scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
