Hancock Soccer Advances to Finals of Bulldog Classic Tournament

The Bulldog Classic Soccer Tournament turned into an exciting weekend for the Allan Hancock College men’s soccer team as the Bulldogs fought their way into the finals only to lose in the championship game to 10-time conference champions Rio Hondo.

The team started off strong on Friday, Sept. 11, beating West Hills College 3-0. Jose Angel Cortes (Santa Maria, CA), from Pioneer Valley High School, scored two of those goals. Freshman Rosario Bras (Santa Maria, CA), from Righetti, scored the other.

On day two of the tournament, the Bulldogs went up against College of the Desert. The game was tied 1-1 and ended up in shootout. Hancock goal keeper John-Carlo Boyle (Santa Maria, CA ), from St. Joseph High School, blocked College of the Desert’s last shot to ensure a 8-7 victory for the Bulldogs. Cortes scored the team’s one goal against College of the Desert.

Two wins in two days brought the Bulldogs to the championship round of the tournament, where they started off strong in the first half, but faltered in the second, losing 1-5 to Rio Hondo. Bras scored the team’s one goal in the championship game.

The Hancock men’s soccer team is set to play again on Friday, Sept. 25 against Fresno City College at 4 p.m. right here in Santa Maria. The results from the Bulldog Classic bring the team up to a record of 3-2-1 in non-conference play.
