Gomez and Guzman Score, Bulldogs Fall 3-2 at Taft

Migel Gomez and Jorge Guzman each scored in the first half as the Allan Hancock College men's soccer team nearly pulled off an upset to open the 2016 season. The Bulldogs fell 3-2 at Taft College on Friday afternoon. Taft, a perennial playoff team and defending Central Valley Conference champion, improved to 1-0 to start the year. Hancock fell to 0-1.

The Bulldogs struck first in the fifth minute of the match when Gomez, a freshman, found the back of the net on an unassisted goal. The Cabrillo High School graduate scored Hancock's first goal against Taft in at least four matches against the Cougars.

Taft evened the score in the 31st minute on a header off a cornerkick. The Bulldogs answered right back to regain the lead in the 42nd minute when Guzman scored his first goal of the season with an assist from Gomez.

Hancock carried a 2-1 lead into the second half. The Cougars tied it 2-2 in the 57th minute, and took the lead for good 3-2 with a goal off a penalty kick in the 69th minute.

Hancock finished with 10 shots overall, including six on goal.
Jose Cardenas, a freshman, played the first half in goal for Hancock. The Lompoc High School graduate allowed one goal and did not face another shot on target. Maisen Bardo took over goalie duties in the second half. The Righetti High School graduate allowed two goals and recorded three saves.

The Bulldogs return home to open a three-game homestand. Hancock hosts Pasadena City College on Tuesday, August 30 at 4 p.m.
