Bulldog Women Lose Conference Opener 58-52 to Moorpark
Eleven second chance points proved by the visiting Raiders proved to be the difference in the Allan Hancock College women's basketball team's 58-52 loss to Moorpark College in both teams' conference openers on Wednesday night in Joe White Memorial Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs fell to 8-9 overall and 0-1 in Western State Conference action, while Moorpark improved to 9-7 and 1-0 in league.
Ali Rodriguez led the Bulldogs with 14 points on five for 12 shooting, including a two for three effort from three-point range. Nicole De La Guerra added 12 points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals. The Pioneer Valley High School graduate made four of her nine shots from the field.
Tashara Pruett finished with eight points and eight rebounds, including four offensive boards. Celina Calderon added nine points, five rebounds and three assists. Freshman guard Marissa Torres added seven points.
Hancock trailed 33-31 at halftime after shooting 44 percent from the field. The Bulldogs finished at 35 percent for the game after a six for 23 effort (26 percent) in the second half. Moorpark shot 40 percent for the game and made just seven of 15 free throws (47 percent).
Sydney Bennett led the Raiders with 15 points and Jessie Sager came off the bench to score 14 points, six rebounds and three steals. Lindsay Neuner and Ashley Ontiveras added 11 points apiece.
Moorpark outrebounded Hancock 35-31 thanks to 13 offensive rebounds. Ontiveras had four offensive rebounds for the Raiders. Hancock had eight offensive boards. Hancock committed 15 turnovers, while the Bulldog defense forced 11 Moorpark turnovers that they cashed into 14 points.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, Jan. 10, at 7 p.m. at Cuesta College.
