Hancock Women Fall 61-53 at Santa Barbara City College

Nicole De La Guerra scored a team-high 13 points to lead three Bulldogs in double figures, but the Allan Hancock College women's basketball team dropped a 61-53 decision at Santa Barbara City College on Wednesday night.

Hancock dropped to 3-8 in Western State Conference play and 11-16 overall. The Vaqueros improved to 5-6 in league and 10-16 for the season.

De La Guerra, a sophomore guard, scored seven of her 13 points in the first half as the Hancock women trailed 32-29 at halftime.  The Bulldogs made 11 of their 22 shots in the opening 20 minutes and eight of their 11 free throw attempts. Jazmine Cooks scored all six of her points in the first half. 

Hancock tied the game 34-34 early in the second half after Marissa Torres converted a three-point play. However, Santa Barbara regained control and regained a 10-point lead with 12 minutes to play.

Ali Rodriguez and Tashara Pruett added 10 points apiece. Rodriguez, a Pioneer Valley High School graduate, made four of nine from the floor and two of four from the foul line. The sophomore added six rebounds and three assists. Pruett, a freshman center, was four of five from the field and two of five from the free throw line. She added six rebounds and two steals.

De La Guerra was four for 11 from the field and converted four of her six foul shots. She added eight rebounds and three steals to lead the Bulldogs. Torres was a perfect three for three from the foul line and made three of five from the floord. The freshman added six rebounds.

Overall, Hancock shot 42 percent from the field by making 19 of 45 from the floor. The Bulldogs made just one of five from three-point range and hit 14 of 23 free throw attempts for a 61 percent clip.  The Bulldogs pulled down 35 rebounds, including 11 on the offensive glass.

The Bulldogs close the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 21, against Oxnard. Tip off in Joe White Memorial Gymnasium at 5 p.m. The contest will mark the final game in a Bulldog uniform for four sophomores, Rodriguez, De La Guerra, Calderon, and Jasmin Chavez.
